la fortuna

while john and i were having a blast white water rafting, dee was having the exact opposite experience. she went on the canyoneering trip where they hiked up to waterfalls and then rappelled down five 100 meter waterfalls. john and i thought she might return with an injury, but nope, she returned with a look of disgust. she hated being cold, next to the waterfall attached to a rope with it raining on her. she was very miserable. poor girl. i wish i had gone so i could have cheered her up a little or made her more comfortable.

anyways, we regrouped and hung out with some of the group. we went to check out the pics from the rafting trip which turned out to be really nice ones of john and i since we were in the front of the boat.

we were thinking about doing the safari river tour but ultimately decided against so we could sleep in. we were so tired and we wanted to feel like we were on a vacation.

the rest of the night was rain, rain, rain. it was pouring. our a/c and tv were not working so our room was humid and a little smelly from our wet clothes. however, we were so tired that as soon as our heads hit the pillows, we were out, and we were going to be out until we wanted to wake up.
it was nice just slowly waking up and having the day to do whatever, which in la fortuna doesn’t give us much options. we found a nice little coffee place where they serve coffee in an unusual way. it was strong and good. not the mass processed coffee from starbucks.

afterwards, we strolled around the main street. once we turned around, we saw the awesome view of the volcano. it was behind us the whole time. so, we tried finding a place to sit and enjoy the view over another cup of joe. but we didn’t find one. we did find a little open air restaurant with hanging bunches of bananas which attracted bugs and birds. we saw some new species of birds that i tried capturing but they were moving fast. at first, the hanging swarm of bugs near our heads was alarming but we settled on the fact that it is better they are messing with the bananas than us.

then it rained. it poured so hard that the roof started leaking. we moved. the heavy downpour had us worried that we might not be able to go on the hike to the volcano lookout point tonight. but it soon stopped.

we left and now i’m sitting in an internet cafe typing this blog entry. i have one rant about the internet cafes here. they have the computers configured for spanish. everything is in spanish. i am clicking on menu entries hoping that they are in the same place, which they are. i can’t find the single quote key on the keyboard and the forward slash is shift-7. the backslash is a weird alt_gr-”. it is really frustrating sometimes. in thailand, they had the language bar where you could at least change the language of the OS.

anyways, i write later about the volcano trip.
